Communication Milestones

Understanding typical communication development helps identify when a child may benefit from speech-language therapy.

Age-Based Milestones

Birth to 12 Months

Cooing, babbling, responding to sounds, using gestures, first words emerging around 12 months.

12 to 24 Months

Growing vocabulary (50+ words by 2 years), combining two words, following simple directions, pointing to pictures.

2 to 3 Years

Using 3-4 word sentences, asking questions, speech becoming clearer, understanding basic concepts.

3 to 5 Years

Speaking in longer sentences, telling stories, most speech sounds clear, engaging in conversations.

5+ Years

Complex grammar, clear speech, reading readiness, understanding abstract concepts, social communication skills.
